Since 1998 the International Early Railways Conference has been presenting and publishing the best, and most recent, research into Early Railways (in England 1604-1830) and Early Mainline Period (1830-1870), as well as the Classical and Medieval periods.

Coal Trimmers at Cardiff, Penarth and Barry docks worked in the holds of ships levelling coal by shovel. This would ensure the coal would not move in transit and cause the ship to list or roll to one side.
